Minsk – Today, the Belarusian court handed down a verdict against opposition leader Svyatlana Cichanouska and sentenced her to 15 years in prison. The former opposition presidential candidate lives in Lithuanian exile, the trial was held in her absence. According to the Russian news agency TASS, the court found Cichanouska guilty of treason, conspiracy to unconstitutionally seize power, or founding and leading an extremist group. Cichanouská has previously described the process as staged and as revenge for the Belarusian authoritarian leader Alexander Lukashenko.
