The Fabia damage accident happened in the local part of Miřetic, in Švihov. The 57-year-old non-swimmer was pulled out of the water by a spreader driver who was driving by and saw the car in the water. He called 158 and then jumped into the water and swam about 15 meters to the sinking car.

“This 49-year-old rescuer did not hesitate and jumped into the icy water, when the air temperature was below zero, and tried to save the driver from to extricate the car. Fortunately, he managed to do that and certainly saved the driver's life,” said police spokeswoman Markéta Janovská.

The rescued man was treated by paramedics, and the driver who jumped into the water was taken care of by firefighters. “The firemen provided him with spare clothes and thermal comfort. The firemen from the boat were conducting a survey to see if there were any oil stains on the surface of the pond, i.e. if there were no operational fillings leaking from the car,” said firemen's spokeswoman Vendula Horáková. With the help of divers and a crane, the firemen pulled the car out of the water, she added.

“We warn drivers that even though the daytime temperatures in some places in the Pardubice region may reach ten degrees on some days, the roads may be icy in the morning,” added Janovská .
