The police have not yet identified the attacker or his victims. Medical sources said two children, aged five and six, were in critical condition.

The car plowed into people at a bus stop in Ramot, a Jewish settlement in East Jerusalem. Tensions rose in the Israeli-annexed eastern half of Jerusalem when a Palestinian gunman shot and killed seven people on January 27. It was the deadliest attack in Jerusalem in more than ten years.

The issue of Jerusalem is in many ways at the heart of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. While Israel considers Jerusalem its indivisible capital, the Palestinians want its eastern part to become the capital of a future Palestinian state.
