“Our embassy in Ankara is in contact with the family and the Turkish authorities. We will not provide further details regarding the survivors,” the spokesman said. Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský (Pirates) spoke on Wednesday about the fact that a Czech woman with permanent residence in Turkey is missing.

The devastating earthquake that struck the area on the border between Turkey and Syria on Monday according to the latest balance, it claimed over 16,000 victims, the AFP agency wrote. At least 12,873 people have died in Turkey, the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Agency (AFAD) said this morning. On the Syrian side, according to the latest available data, there are 3162 dead.

In recent years, Czech citizens have rarely been victims of earthquakes and similar disasters. For example, in the most tragic natural disaster of recent decades, the earthquake and subsequent tsunami that affected the countries surrounding the western tip of the Indian Ocean in December 2004, nine Czechs died, mostly in Thailand. A total of 230,000 people died then. In April 2009, two Czech citizens were among the three hundred victims of a strong earthquake in central Italy.

According to Lipavský's statement on Wednesday, the Czech Republic is ready to possibly extend the ten-day stay of a team of 68 rescuers in Turkey and to increase financial and material assistance. It follows requests for the form of aid from Turkey. He will send generators and sleeping bags to the country next week, and is monitoring other requests.

According to the head of diplomacy, the government is not forgetting Syria either, but due to the complicated security situation there, aid will be sent through international organizations. The government office said that the Czechia will send ten million crowns to help Syria. The Czech Republic has already allocated the same amount for Turkey.
