American actor Johnny Depp at the Cannes Film Festival, May 17, 2023.
Cannes (France) – American actor Johnny Depp arrived late at the press conference of the Cannes Film Festival today and declared that “Hollywood does not need”, reported the DPA agency. According to the actor, all claims about the attack on his ex-wife, which have appeared in the media in recent years, are “terrible fiction”, writes AFP. At the festival, Depp presents the film Jeanne du Barry – The King's Mistress, in which he portrayed Louis XV.
For Depp, this is the first premiere in three years, when his career was affected by a legal dispute with ex-wife Amber Heard over allegations of domestic violence. But the actor today denied that it was a comeback. “I've obviously had 17 comebacks. I haven't gone anywhere,” Depp said.
Depp praised director Ma?wenn's courage for casting a “guy from Kentucky” in the role of the French king. He thanked her for the patience she had with him during filming.
“I don't feel boycotted by Hollywood because I don't think about Hollywood. I don't really need Hollywood anymore,” said Depp, according to the AP. He also criticized that in today's society no one can be himself and has to pretend. He also commented on the articles that were published about him, calling them poorly written and false.
The 76th edition of the famous film festival began on Tuesday evening in the resort of Cannes in the south of France. 21 films are competing for the Golden Palm this year, the jury will announce the winner on May 27. Depp's participation in the festival caused stormy reactions among Heard's supporters, several feminist organizations called for a boycott of the festival because of him, writes AFP.
