President Gabriel Boric will travel to Mexico this Tuesday to participate in the Pacific Alliance summit, after having formed part of APEC in Thailand.
The Executive made a positive assessment of the latter appointment, despite the fact that Canada will not sign the so-called side letters under the TPP11.
“We did well”, was what was repeated among government authorities at the end of Boric’s fifth international tour, who made his debut before the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum.
The President took advantage of the meeting to talk with different leaders of the economies present and carry out the last steps before depositing the Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership Treaty.
TPP11: former foreign ministers and Boric’s efforts
Although Canada does not will sign side letters, despite the well-known relationship between Boric and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, a memorandum was signed with the dispute resolution mechanism.
On this point, former Foreign Minister Heraldo Muñoz pointed out that “the most surprising thing is that the joint declaration between the two countries recognizes that the TPP11 contains strong safeguards for our rights and regulatory sovereignty”.
“This is contrary to the criticisms we have heard from the government of the investment chapter of the TPP11”, he added in that sense.
On another level, former Foreign Minister Ignacio Walker highlighted the tone of the Executive at this summit. For this reason, he hopes that this will be maintained in terms of foreign trade and with respect to international treaties.
In this context, he highlighted two policies that could be implemented soon: updating the agreement with the European Union and depositing the TPP11.
Boric himself answered about it, assuring that Chile is more inserted than ever” in the world. In addition, he ruled out contradictions in the text signed with Canada.
“We do not question the need for international treaties or open trade, but rather how to protect fair, equitable, sustainable and sustainable over time”, he said.
Boric’s trip to Mexico days after the APEC
