Prague – Candidate for Prague mayor Bohuslav Svoboda (ODS) wants to be an ordinary deputy after his election to the head of the metropolis. He will make available positions in the House committees. He will also resign from the position of head of the gynecological clinic and resign from the board of directors of the General Health Insurance Company. Svoboda announced this to ČTK in a press statement today.

Seventy-nine-year-old Svoboda is a candidate for mayor for Spolu (ODS, TOP 09 and KDU-ČSL), which is preparing to sign a coalition agreement with Pirates and STAN on Wednesday. The parties have already approved the draft coalition agreement. Svoboda is to be elected mayor on February 16 at a meeting of city representatives.

“If I am elected mayor this week, the ODS parliamentary club will then meet, where I will make available the position of chairman of the health care committee, as well as membership in the petition committee, and I will also resign from membership in the committee for science, education, culture, youth and sports. So I will remain only an ordinary member of parliament,” said Svoboda.

He added that he will hand over the post of head of the Gynecology Clinic of the 3rd Faculty of Medicine of the Charles University and ÚVN to his successor. “I will also minimize my work there, but in such a way as not to jeopardize the operation of the clinic and the health of the patients. I also expect to resign from the membership of the board of directors of the VZP,” he added.

The coalition will be formed in the metropolis almost five months after the municipal elections, which is the longest in the history of the Czech Republic. At the same time, Prague remained the last municipality that still does not have a new leader after the elections. Negotiations gradually became more complicated for various reasons. The situation was unblocked in mid-January by Spolu's offer, so that the Pirates and STAN would have a combined majority in the council, and subsequently the withdrawal of the Pirates from the alliance they had previously established with Praha Sobě.

The eleven-member council of the capital will have five Spolu representatives, whereas ODS will have three representatives including the mayor and TOP 09 will have two. Instead of positions in the council, KDU-ČSL will occupy two chairperson positions in municipal committees. Pirates will have four councilors and STAN two. The coalition will have a majority of 36 votes in the 65-member council. The coalition agreement does not include the vote of representative Hana Kordová Marvanová, elected on behalf of Spolu.

The Spolu coalition won the municipal municipal elections last fall, winning 19 mandates. ANO ended second with 14 mandates. The Pirates have 13 representatives and Praha Sobě 11 mandates. Five representatives were won by the STAN movement and three by the SPD.
