Amélie Nothomb has lost his father, carried away by a cancer, in the month of march last. Two months later, the writer has decided to pay tribute to him with a letter, shared by France Inter.
It was a great great figure of the diplomacy of the belgian. On the 17th of march last, Patrick Nothomb, the father of the novelist Amélie Nothomb, died of cancer at the age of 83 years. The man, who was retired, had worked as ambassador of Belgium in several countries in Asia. Nearly two months later, her daughter decided to write him a letter of several pages. The touching words and intimate that she wanted to share with France Inter, which has, in turn, posted on Instagram, Friday, 8 may.
“Dear dad, the march, 17, 23: 30, you decided to leave. I respect your decision. I understand you : you have chosen to die at home, in the arms of Mom”, began the writer’s 53-year-old writing his letter. “When I write that you have chose to die, I’m not talking about euthanasia, even if this topic doesn’t shock me”, she adds. Thereafter, Amélie Nothomb explains that his father Patrick Nothomb was”suffering deeply” a cancer “that could corrode”.
“Death is not the cessation of love”
“You died on the first day of the confinement. It’s also, I think that you have decided. The containment, it was not made for you. […] You would not have to bear. You have always loved the outdoors, festivals, meetings. You have always liked the other”, continues the writer. “I’m writing you a letter. You wrote a lot of letters, more remarkable than the others”, she adds. Then, Amélie Nothomb tells an anecdote about his father, and on the last letter he wrote, six days before his death, addressed to the author Stephanie Rattle. “The containment, for me, it is to your departure. I refuse to accept that it is your absence. Death is not the cessation of love”, concludes the author, before sending one last kiss to her father, and to sign her first name, Amelia.
