According to the media, most of the bodies washed up on the shore near the seaside resort in the province of Crotone. Some were fished out of the sea. According to the media, there is also a several-month-old child among the dead.

Rescue work, in which the coast guard, border police and firefighters were involved, continues. So far, about 40 survivors have been found, said fire department spokesman Luca Cari.

Details about the migrants' nationalities are not yet known. It is not yet clear where the ship sailed from. Vessels with migrants to Calabria usually set sail from Egyptian or Turkish shores, the AP agency pointed out.
