Discovery of the year is Samara Joy, and 73-year-old blues singer Bonnie Raitt took home the song of the year award.

Beyoncé swept four of the nine categories in which she was nominated, including Best Dance/Electronic Album of the Year for her Renaissance record. “I'm trying not to get too emotional. I'm just trying to take in tonight,” Beyoncé said as her husband, rapper Jay-Z, stood in the audience and applauded her. She also thanked her family and “the queer community for loving her and for inventing the genre”.

The pop singer was late to the awards ceremony, with gala host Trevor Noah saying she was stuck in traffic. When she finally arrived, Noah presented her with the award for Best R&B Song at her table.

The album of the year award, which Beyoncé never won, ended up going to Harry Styles for Harry's House. “Every artist in this category has inspired me a lot,” said a surprised Styles while accepting the award. Together with him, the albums of singer and composer Adele, veterans of the disco era of ABBA, Lizzo and Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny were also nominated, AP reminds.

But singer Lizzo won the award for record of the year for her single About Damn Time. The prestigious song of the year award went to singer-songwriter Bonnie Raittová, who did not hide her shock. “I'm so surprised. I don't know what to say,” Raitt said, adding that her song Just Like That is about organ donation.

The discovery of the year was the American jazz singer Samara Joy, who beat such performers as the group Wet Led, the Latin American singer Anitta and the winner of last year's Eurovision contest Maneskin. The New Yorker broke down in tears while accepting the award, noting that she was accompanied by her little brother.

Bad Bunny kicked off the ceremony with an energetic performance, according to the AP, which had many in the audience, including singer Taylor Swift, dancing at her table. Soon after, Swift won the award for best music video of the year for All Too Well, a version of her 2012 single.

Kendrick Lamar won the trophy for the best rap artist for the sixth time in his career performance for The Heart Part 5 and also won Best Rap Album for his record Mr. Morales & The Big Steppers.

American actress Viola Davis, after winning the category of best audiobook or narration, entered the elite club called EGOT, i.e. personalities who have an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony award.
