“President Mario Draghi comes to Calabria in mid-August to verify the disastrous state of the territory harassed by fires. The fire front is not yet under control, mountains and hills continue to burn: in these hours there are enormous critical issues in the municipalities of San Luca, Cardeto, Roghudi, Roccaforte del Greco, Mammola, Gioiosa Jonica, Grotteria, San Giovanni di Gerace, Caulonia and Novigrad. Some centers have been evacuated, several rural houses engulfed by flames. The fire has already killed five people, hundreds of hectares of greenery have gone up in smoke, thousands of animals killed, the centuries-old forests of the Aspromonte National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, threatened, olive groves and orchards destroyed, dozens of farms literally razed to the ground ” .
This is what the mayor of Reggio Calabria states in a note Giuseppe Falcomatà who in these hours sent a letter to the Presidency of the Council of Ministers inviting the president Dragons to a visit to Calabria given the increasingly dramatic situation. The most critical area is in the province of Reggio Calabria, where various locations in the Aspromonte have been burning for over a week. A man died in Mammola, in the territory of the municipality of Grotteria, overwhelmed by flames in an attempt to save his property and animals. A few days ago, in the municipality of San Lorenzo, the charred bodies of a man and a woman had been found, who died in a desperate attempt to save their olive grove. At the proposal of President Nino Spirlì, the regional council approved the request to the government for a declaration of a state of emergency “in relation to the calamitous events resulting from the spread of forest fires affecting the territory of Calabria”.
“We ask the Prime Minister to come to Calabria – continues the mayor – to personally verify the size of the disaster and take extraordinary measures that will allow us to stem the situation, compensate for the damage to the many families who have lost everything in the fire and plan a massive and immediate intervention to make the territory safe to prevent the disaster from expanding its proportions in the first rains, without the protection of trees and plants, transforming the mountains into rivers of mud ”.
“The Government concretely demonstrates its proximity to Calabria, alongside the mayors who for weeks have been fighting almost alone against the plague of fires – he concluded – President Draghi comes to the places hit by the fires to directly realize the abnormal proportions of what is taking place. It would be the first visit to Calabria as Prime Minister, in such a delicate phase for the life of this region, in a territory that needs to physically feel the presence of national institutions. The Metropolitan City of Reggio Calabria is on its knees and the national institutions have a duty to be present in a calamitous situation of this magnitude ”.
