České Budějovice – According to ČEZ, small modular reactors could be located in Temelín, Tušimice, Prunéřov, Ledvice, Poříčí, Dětmarovice and Dukovany. These are places where there are now coal or other power plants. The first such reactor will be built in Temelín in 2032, Silvana Jirotková, director of CEZ's department for the development of small modular reactors, told journalists today. None of the ČEZ representatives said how much the construction of the reactor will cost.

In 2050, according to Jirotková, a significant part of resources will be missing in the Czech Republic, due to the growing consumption of electricity. In addition to Temelín, small modular reactors could be located in places where ČEZ now operates coal-fired power plants. “We would like to transform them into small modular reactors with regard to the environment and the emission-free policy,” said Jirotková. The first could start operating in Temelín in 2032. According to Jirotková, this is a “very ambitious goal.”
The International Atomic Energy Agency defines a small modular reactor as a nuclear power plant with an electrical output of up to 300 megawatts . According to ČEZ, however, it is easier and faster to build than large nuclear reactors.
