Bullfighting, secular tradition or barbaric act? The deputy La France insoumise Aymeric Caron presents a bill to France. the National Assembly which aims to ban the practice, which is very popular in the South West and around the Mediterranean.

In the text of his proposal, the deputy parisian puts forward an opinion of the national order of veterinarians published in 2016 which stated that “bullfighting” are not compatible with respect for animal welfare.

For their part, supporters of bullfighting are defending themselves. Elected officials and aficionados will organize gatherings on Saturday November 19 to support their tradition. On this issue, public opinion is divided. In February 2022, responding to an Ifop poll, 77% of French people said they were in favor of prohibition of this practice. But in bullfighting towns, where this practice has been anchored for generations, 72% of the inhabitants are in favor of maintaining bullfighting.

The deputy’s bill, which should be submitted to vote on November 24 in the hemicycle, has very little chance of being adopted. The government of Elisabeth Borne has already let it be known that he would vote against Aymeric Caron’s proposal.
