Mäder went off the road at high speed in the final downhill and fell into a ravine. Doctors found him in the water, and since the rider was unresponsive, they had to resuscitate him. He was then airlifted to a hospital in Chur, where he succumbed to his injuries.

“It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that we have to announce the passing of Gino Mäder,” Bahrain Victorious officials said. “Everyone in the team is devastated and our thoughts and prayers are with Gino's family,” they added.

“It is a huge loss. Gino was not only a talented cyclist, but also a great person,” added team director Milan Erzen . “From now on, we will ride for him at every race. And he will be part of our team forever,” he declared.

Mäder joined the Bahrain Victorious team two years ago and immediately won a stage at the Giro d'Italia in its colors. In 2021, he also dominated the young rider rankings at the Vuelta. He has also worked in the Dimension Data team.
