According to a German-language newspaper, Mitsubishi was the protagonist in Germany of an investigation into diesel emission manipulation devices. An investigation that was already closed last March, but whose final coordinates have only recently been known.

An article in Handelsblatt explains how the Japanese brand has negotiated for 25 million euros, in order to close the proceeding. Which is open for Mitsubishi suppliers, including German ones. According to prosecutors, Mitsubishi’s management failed to adapt the vehicles to the 1.6-liter diesel engine regulations, selling non-compliant cars.

At the beginning of 2020, the Public Prosecutor’s Office in Frankfurt had searched the Mitsubishi headquarters looking for evidence on an alleged manipulation of emissions, in particular of nitrogen oxides, of vehicles equipped with Euro 5 and Euro 6 approved four-cylinder diesel engines. : “the investigators believe that the house of the Three Diamonds has installed a device which, recognizing the tests on the rollers, made the technology for the abatement of exhaust gases work in order to fall within the approval limits. What is illegal is not the equipment to detect the tests, but the modification of the operation of the system“.

In 2016 Mitsubishi officially admitted that it had improperly carried out tests on emissions on fuel consumption, in order to present better rates than those currently achieved ”. In that case it was a manipulation of the homologation tests of anti-smog emissions and consumption on over 600 thousand cars destined only for the Japanese market, in particular the eK Wagon and the eK Space.
