Queen Elizabeth II of England visit to the Royal Air Force at Marham. On February 3, 2020 By Sarah Rozenbaum
Queen Elizabeth II has sent 6 times directly to his people since the beginning of his reign. A 7th speech was in fact ready…
In 68 years of reign, queen Elizabeth II has sent 6 times directly to his subjects, and twice the last month, once to support his people in the fight against the coronavirus and the second in order not to forget the Second world war, when it is celebrated at the beginning of the month the 75 years of the armistice.
But another speech was ready, it was years. The sovereign has fortunately never had to be broadcast.
In fact, in 1983, the queen and her advisers had prepared a speech in case of an outbreak of the cold war, while tensions between the United States and the USSR were at their worst. These are archives made public in 2013 that revealed the content of that speech. The queen would have had to expand on the “madness of war” in these words : “today, the madness of war is spreading throughout the world and our brave country must again prepare itself to survive in the face of adversity.”
A call to remain united
Queen Elizabeth II had also planned to make reference to the speech delivered by his father in order to announce the between in war of the United Kingdom in 1939 : “I have never forgotten the sorrow and pride I felt while I was in front of the radio in the bedroom with my sister, to listen to the words of my father, king George VI, the decisive day of 1939… At any time, I never imagined that this solemn and awful duty would come back to me” to finish on an appeal to the british people to remain united to it : “If families remain united and determined, are home to those who are alone and without protection, the will to survive of our country will not be broken“.
A speech that, nearly 40 years later, shows how the threat of an open conflict between the two great powers of the time has passed extremely close to becoming reality.
