Los Angeles – Will the sci-fi film Everything, Everywhere, suddenly confirm the role of the favorite and add the most famous one to the series of awards from the last few weeks? Will a Czech artist win the Oscar after more than ten years? These questions will also be answered at Sunday's ceremony in Los Angeles, during which the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will announce the winners of the 95th year of its prestigious awards. The complete list will be known on Monday morning CET. Four Czechs nominated in three technical categories for their work on the war film On the Western Front have a chance to win an Oscar.

The winners have been decided since Tuesday, when the online voting by members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences ended. According to Variety, over 9,600 actors, directors, screenwriters and other film industry workers who make up the Academy could vote this year. After the votes are tallied, the results are strictly guarded and, according to the academy's website, only two people from the consulting company that handles the process know them until the famous envelopes are opened during the gala evening.
Nevertheless, the multi-genre spectacle Everything, everywhere, at once, which tells a story about relations between generations and existential distress against the background of a crazy visual page involving jumping between parallel realities, is considered to be a fairly clear favorite of this year. The film from the workshop of the smaller studio A24 is nominated for the best feature film and also ten other awards, which put it in the best position after the nominations.
According to both Variety and The Hollywood Reporter, he is virtually certain to take home the Academy Award on Monday night. Everything, everywhere, suddenly dominates this year's season of American film awards and, among other things, it was declared the best film of the past year at its own awards by the association of Hollywood directors, screenwriters, producers and actors. The films that in the past claimed this quartet of firsts always crowned the winning streak at the Oscars. However, this year's favorite did not change the nominations in the main categories at the British Film Academy Awards and at the Golden Globes.
A total of ten titles were nominated for the best feature film award in January. In addition to the mentioned work by the director duo Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, there is also a black comedy about the breakup of the friendship of the Fairy of Inisherin, which, like On the Western Front, collected nine nominations. The action blockbusters Top Gun: Maverick and Avatar: The Way of Water, the dramas Fabelman, Elvis, Tár and Women Talking and the comedy Triangle of Sorrow also competed for the top prize.
On the Western Front, Tranquility is considered the favorite in the non-American film category. The German adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque's famous novel, which was created under the banner of the streaming service Netflix, was partly filmed in the Czech Republic, and the crew included Czech filmmakers, four of whom appear in Oscar-nominated teams. It concerns Linda Eisenhamerová in the make-up category, Viktor Prášil in the sound category and Viktor Müller with Kamil Jafar in the visual effects category.
The team with Prášil already has a British BAFTA award to their credit and if he or someone else from the above four succeeded on Sunday evening, it would mean the first Oscar for a Czech artist since 2008. At that time, the composition Falling Slowly from the film romance Once by the Czech-Irish couple Markéta Irglová and Glen Hansard was awarded as the best film song. The last nominated artist from the Czech Republic was set designer Nora Sopková in 2020 for the set of the film Jojo Rabbit.
The 95th Oscars could also bring the first award for a woman of Asian origin for a performance in a leading role. Among the nominees is a native of Malaysia, Michelle Yeoh, who suddenly portrayed a frustrated mother losing touch with her teenage daughter in the film Everything, Everywhere. Composer John Williams, at 91, could become the oldest winner in the history of the film academy awards.
In addition to individual stories, the media before Sunday's ceremony also write about the significance of the evening for the entire film academy, which has struggled in recent years poor viewership at the Oscars and various controversies, such as actor Will Smith's slap to host Chris Rock last year for a joke about Smith's wife. This year's broadcast will be moderated by comedian Jimmy Kimmel, who joked in the trailer that he wants to avoid such a clash at all costs, because it would surely make him cry.
The gala evening broadcast from Hollywood's Dolby Theater to the whole world begins on Monday 02 :00 CET.
