Fowler and Schauffele equaled the maximum of South African Branden Grace, who has so far been the only one able to play a round of 62 shots at a major tournament. He did it in 2017 at the British Open.

Fowler, who birdied ten times, was the first to reach the record mark in Los Angeles. He celebrated his return to the US Open in style, where he did not qualify in the previous two years.

“It was a difficult and challenging period. But I'm enjoying it all the more now and here,” said the 34-year-old Fowler. “At the same time, I didn't do well here in the preparation, but I kept working and it finally fell into place,” he added.

Schauffele followed up with Fowler about fifteen minutes later. “I was watching Rickie on the scoreboard and every time I made a birdie, I was still second. So I thought: If he can do it, so can I,” said the 29-year-old golfer.

First round on the course Los Angeles Country Club also saw two holes played in one stroke. Home team Sam Burns and Matthieu Pavon from France did it. Both managed it on hole number fifteen.
