Government shelling on Idlib..9 dead, including 7 children

The death toll rose after the death of a girl succumbed to her injuries in the town of Balshon in the southern countryside of Idlib, according to “AFP”, quoting the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Several areas in Idlib have been subjected to repeated bombardment for nearly a month by government forces, while armed groups respond by targeting the latter’s control sites in adjacent areas.

The mutual shelling comes despite a ceasefire in the area for more than a year.

The observatory said that the bombing on Saturday morning wounded 15 others in several locations in the Jabal Al-Zawiya area, in the southern countryside of Idlib.

He explained that the bombing killed five people from one family, a man, his wife and their three children in the town of Iblin, in addition to the killing of two children in the town of Balion and two girls in the village of Balshon in Idlib countryside.

An AFP photographer in Ibelin saw the family’s bodies arriving at a medical point, and they were transported by car and wrapped in blankets.

He said that a cleric, with the help of others, later washed the body of a boy and shrouded it in a white cloth in preparation for burial.

Saturday’s bombing is considered one of the deadliest since the ceasefire came into effect in March 2020, announced by Moscow, which supports Damascus, and Ankara, which supports the armed factions.

The agreement came after a large-scale attack launched by the Syrian government forces with Russian support over a period of 3 months, which forced about one million people to flee their homes, according to the United Nations.

The ceasefire is still holding to a large extent, despite repeated violations punctuated by Russian aerial bombardment and artillery shelling by the Syrian government forces.

Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (formerly al-Nusra) and other less influential factions control half of Idlib and its surroundings.

The region is home to 3 million people, nearly half of whom are internally displaced.
