Prague – During the EU negotiations on the adoption of the Istanbul Convention, the Czech representative should abstain, the government decided today. The cabinet will still discuss the national approach. Minister of Justice Pavel Blažek (ODS) informed journalists about the procedure. Before the government meeting, he noted that the topic at the European level has begun to rush because the Swedish presidency wants to open it. The Convention condemns domestic violence, sexual harassment, rape, forced marriages, so-called honor crimes or genital mutilation. The documentary perceives violence against women as a violation of human rights and discrimination.

Blažek called it paradoxical that the proposal should be approved by the Council of Ministers of Transport. After the cabinet meeting, he confirmed that Minister of Transport Martin Kupka (ODS) will act for the Czech Republic. In general, according to Blažek, passions should calm down in the debate on the Istanbul Convention at the national level, the government plans to decide on the referral of the document for ratification in a week. According to the minister, the party bodies of the government coalition of five will also discuss the topic.
