“There is no veto for any candidate by our government, I want to be absolutely clear on that,” President Boric stated.

The Government continues to seek a “broad agreement” in the Senate, to ratify the candidate he will present to become the new National Prosecutor.

This was stated by president Gabriel Boric< /strong> from Thailand, where he participates in the Asia Pacific Economic Forum, APEC 2022.

This is a complex issue for La Moneda, mainly because it does not have a sufficient majority in the Senate to obtain the approval of the candidate it presents to lead the Public Ministry.

To this is added the resignation of Rodrigo Ríos, who was one of those selected by the Supreme Court in the group that sent the President of the Republic.

Let us remember that according to current legislation, once the maximum tribune selects five candidates, sends the list to the Executive, who chooses a candidate, a name that must be ratified by two-thirds of the Senate.

Government rules out vetoes for candidates for National Prosecutor

According to reports, the Justice Minister, Marcela Ríos, has made intense efforts in the Upper House to prevent the candidate from being rejected, causing new embarrassment in the Government.

Although, from the opposition they have also accused La Moneda of trying to bring a candidate knowing that they will not reach consensus, to force the development of a new machine.

However, President Boric categorically ruled out these criticisms, also assuring that there are no vetoes for any candidate, especially for lawyer Ángel Valencia, who achieved one of the first majorities in the Supreme Court.

The latter has been questioned for having led defenses in cases of high public connotation, such as Corpesca, Pacogate and the Garay Case, in addition to the complaint of sexual abuse against the Rancagua Guarantee judge, Luis Hernán Barría Alarcón.

“There is no veto against any candidate by our government, on that I want to be absolutely clear,” the President declared.

“We are making an evaluation and conversation with senators, because this requires a broad agreement of two thirds, and, therefore, it is not something that the Government can impose”, he admitted.

“It is not in our objective in any case to make the quina fail, we respect the powers that the Supreme Court has and we are going to present the four candidates that remain in the competition, let us remember that the candidate Ríos declined his candidacy” Boric added

President Boric bets on “big deal” in the Senate

In this vein, the Head of State insisted on the need to reach a consensus in the Upper House, pointing out that it is a sensitive issue.

“ We are going to present an option to the Senate and we are trying and working with the senators to build a consensus, because we know that no one has the possibility and it is also desirable that on such a sensitive issue, such as the National Prosecutor’s Office, which is in charge of prosecuting the crime in our country, someone tries to prevail over another”, he said.

“We need a great agreement, this is a country issue, it is not a sector issue, It is not a matter of lots, but we have to work together”, he said.

“There are eight days left and I hope it will be resolved as soon as possible”, President Boric concluded.
