Tallahassee (USA) – Florida Governor Ron DeSantis today entered the race for the Republican Party's nomination for the US presidential election. The 44-year-old politician submitted the relevant documents, the Federal Election Commission announced according to Reuters. The election will take place in 2024, and DeSantis' main challenger for the Republican nomination will be former President Donald Trump.

Ron DeSantis planned to announce his candidacy decision during today's debate with the head of Twitter, Elon Musk, but the election commission preempted him with the announcement. According to the AP agency, the debate with Musk should take place at 18:00 local time (midnight CET).

DeSantis spent several years in Congress and was elected governor of Florida in 2018 thanks to the support of the then US president Donald Trump. At the head of the third most populous state in the USA, he has become visible through his opposition to pandemic restrictions and a wave of laws, through which he promotes the priorities of the Republican electorate, from restricting the rights of sexual minorities and access to certain types of health care to the relaxation of gun regulation.
