After being the great winner in the first round of the presidential elections on May 29 in Colombia, with more than 8.5 million votes, without this being enough to be elected as head of state, the presidential candidate of the Historical Pact, Gustavo Petro Urrego, expressed himself tonight before his followers, who filled the Red room of the Tequendama Hotel, in the center of Bogotá.
In the company of his wife, Verónica Alcocer, his running mate for the Vice Presidency, Francia Márquez, his daughter Sofía Petro and several members of his legislative entourage such as Susana Boreal, María José Pizarro, Roy Barreras, among many others, the candidate was overflowing with praise to the more than eight million Colombians who supported him in this first round.
“First of all, I want to thank the families. To France, to Veronica, my children, my granddaughter. We have won. Today is a day of triumph. At this time, I thank the 90,000 witnesses who were accompanying us. A million activists in the streets, in networks. Some with huge waste of energy,” Petro said.
In addition, he recognized the imminent electoral victory that he obtained and recalled the votes that he obtained in the internal consultations of last March 13. He even recalled his defeat in 2018 when today’s president Iván Duque defeated him in the two presidential rounds. “Today we are eight million five hundred thousand Colombians and more than 40 percent. Nor will it compare with the figures of four years ago. Not even with those of March 13. Two million seven hundred thousand votes more than all those of the consultation of the Historical Pact”, he said.
In turn, he recognized the electoral capital that he reached in various sectors of the country and highlighted the help that his lawyer, one of his most faithful squires in the Atlantic, gave him during the campaign.
“I have to thank all that Nariñense, Caucano people. I’m not from Nariño, I’m not from Cauca, but I hope that those winds from the south will blow through all of Colombia. The electorate of Chocó, Valle, Cali, we had our best results there. Also in the Colombian Caribbean. This time he helped us. Miguel Ángel del Río headed so that there would be no buying of votes”, he added, while leaving a particular message in which he said that he will be the first boss of State of the Colombian coast. “Petro, first coastal president of Colombia. The time has come for the coast to determine the change of Colombia. On the other hand, the also former mayor of Bogotá invited the regions of Colombia where Other candidates such as Rodolfo Hernández and Federico Gutiérrez won to support him in the second round, which will be held on June 19. “I ask these departments to join us in this campaign that is coming and that should determine the change in Colombia. What is disputed today is change. The allies of President Duque. His political project has been defeated. I believe that what Colombia’s total vote sends is a message: an era is ending, it ended in the middle of the trap. Now it is about building a future, it is about what we are going to do for Colombia ” , he continued.
In other parts of his diatribe, the also director of the Colombia Humana party made direct comments against his current only contender, Rodolfo Hernández, and questioned him about his videos on TikTok and even reminded him of the case of alleged corruption he faces for Vitalogic, the company which he would have benefited when he was mayor of Bucaramanga. “My opponent is accused of corruption, is that what we want?”, he said.
Likewise, he left a message to the businessmen of the country who do not trust him and invited them to also support him in the ballot that will once and for all define who will be the successor of Iván Duque in the Presidency.
It’s time to choose. What I propose to the business community is social justice and economic stability. It cannot be a company if society is impoverished. It is not jumping into the void in economic stability. To achieve economic stability we need it to allow us to grow social justice.
