The United States has faced a serious problem of police brutality for many decades and, among some of the events that have most outraged North Americans have been racial attacks against people of African descent.

In fact, the problem is so current that President Joe Biden, in January 2023, was outraged after a series of videos were released where some police officers from Memphis beat the African-American Tyre Nichols and whose injuries caused his death.

Faced with this complex panorama, the renowned actor, Jason Beghe spoke with Infobae México about his leading role in the NBC series called Chicago P.Dand how giving life to the character of Sergeant Hank Voight for several seasons has left him with great reflections both on a personal and social level.

“Because a police drama has so much action, there is a scene where you sneak into a building, hide in a corner, draw your gun, there is a person who threatens to shoot you, you have to communicate with your team to ask for help, that's my favorite thing to do, because I love doing that job”, he highlighted, adding:

It's very exciting to see the action being an actor, but it's much more exciting to play.

However, that this series revolves around the Windy Cities Police Department of Chicago and focuses on the police elements and intelligence unit that pursue criminals in the city, hhas left a crude thought about the current context of the United States in the artist.

In this sense, Beghe delved into the police brutality that exists in the North American country and pointed out who, with his performance in Chicago P.D seeks to generate reflection in the public.

“That is something that has affected very personally how we approach the show, because this is a police show in the present tense and the police department in the United States is currently at a time where it must put certain important points on the table, there are some things that have to be paid attention to and it is a difficult thing to understand from the outside and to fix”, he stated.

Also, Jason remarked that with this successful series hoped to cause a positive impact, beyond encouraging bad practices on the part of the police elements.

As for his character, Sergeant Hank Voight, Beghe commented that after playing him for many years he feels very connected to him.

“Having played this character for so long, it's that I can go into his thoughts and make a scene and instead of planning what happens, I get to intuit what will happen and that's exciting and fun. I think on a good day I totally identify with it, that's also my job and it's a really fun thing to do as an actor,” he argued.

It should be remembered that, during the Covid-19 pandemic, Beghe spoke with this medium about the difficulties of to record in the face of a health emergency like the one that hit the world.

“It was our turn in the middle of the eighth season. It has been different since we had to arrive very early to be able to take the COVID-19 test every day, they did not allow many people to congregate in the locations and that caused the recordings to take longer . It wasn't going to be possible to record so many episodes this season because each episode is long,” he said at the time.
