According to Zarif, after the assassination of the Iranian General Qassem Soleimani in Baghdad, Iran and the United States were very close to war. He added that relations between the countries remain tense.
“We were very close to war,” said Zarif.
The Iranian foreign Minister noted that immediately after the murder Soleimani Tehran received from Secretary of state Mike Pompeo “extremely inappropriate” message, which contained overt threats against Iran. Zarif, however, refused to disclose the content of the message.
“Let him tell what was in that letter,” he said.
In addition, Zarif commented on the bumps on the base in Iraq, which housed American military personnel.
“Our goal was to demonstrate to the USA that if they will kill the citizens of Iran, we will strike back,” – said the foreign Minister of Iran.

The document States that the aim of the operation was a response to attacks that had already taken place earlier, as well as deterring possible attacks in the future.
