The third, with a distance of 663 thousandths, was the seven-time British world champion Lewis Hamilton from Mercedes, just ahead of last year's winner Sergio Pérez from Red Bull. The Mexican's team-mate, two-time champion and World Championship leader Max Verstappen of the Netherlands, was only sixth and was not satisfied with the car's setup. Local Charles Leclerc from Ferrari was wedged among the Red Bull drivers, who will try to win the third consecutive Monaco pole position in Saturday's qualifying.
The opening practice session ended three minutes early due to the crash of the Thai pilot Alex Albon from Williams. Twenty minutes before the end, practice was also stopped after the accident of the German Nic Hülkenberg from the Haas team, who hit the barrier behind the tunnel and spun.
The second practice starts at 17:00.
