The winning goal was born from a throw by the new Rossoneri goalkeeper, who then did his duty (twice) even between the posts. And until now … he hasn’t conceded a goal yet
Until a few hours ago the Rossoneri fans were still concentrating above all on Donnarumma, portrayed on the bench with PSG and therefore the object of sarcasm by the Milan fans. From tonight we can certainly begin to shift attention to the new holder of the chair, because Mike Maignan was one of the great protagonists of Marassi’s victory. The best feeling was given by the familiarity with which he managed several balls at the start of action, when potentially disasters like that of Szczesny in Udine can happen. Mike is proving to assimilate rather quickly the deliveries of Pioli, who on the other hand had already praised him on the eve: “I am very happy with him. He is a very good guy, curious in understanding the game plots, sometimes even suspicious because he wants to understand what we propose different. He is very strong, he will give us a great contribution ”.
And that contribution came immediately, at the Serie A debut of this 26-year-old who landed at Milanello with the ranks of champion of France: in short, there are worse alternatives when you have to replace a mythological being like Gigio. Mike started the game by showing that he was comfortable with his feet, so comfortable that he sent Leao directly into the goal with a pass from the area. Overlooking the madness of Sampdoria’s defensive phase, which allowed a similar play, the gesture should be underlined from a Rossoneri’s point of view. A gesture evidently tried in training and which gave excellent results in the game. Because Audero put a patch on Leao with a stratospheric save, while Samp capitulated on Diaz’s goal. Same script, with the only difference that Mike’s deep throw came first on Calabria’s feet, and by him on Diaz’s winning right.
“With the fact that we have such a long, precise and powerful kick, we can find many solutions – said Pioli at the end of the match -. Maignan is doing very well. He is a very strong goalkeeper, I like his mentality and his desire to learn. Donnarumma and Calhanoglu? We do not regret anyone, we have moved on ”. Very clear. Mike, however, did not limit himself to actively participate in the action of the goal, but also did his duty between the posts. Twice: in the first half he deflected a Gabbiadini free-kick on the crossbar and in the second he remedied Hernandez’s mistake just a few steps from the goal with a great reflection. A valuable debut, with a statistic that Mike continues to carry with him and rightly makes him proud: the Rossoneri 16 has not yet conceded a goal. The only two goals AC Milan collected over the summer came with Tatarusanu in goal.
