The start of the literary hardly begun, the juries of the great literary prizes of autumn, starting with that of Goncourt, will know as soon as this week their first selections.
The ten members of the jury of the Goncourt will open the ball on Tuesday, they will be followed the next day by the jury of the Renaudot. The 9 and 11 September, respectively will be the turn of the Médicis and the Femina select the books nominated for the prices to fall.
A total of 524 novels, 336 French novels, among which 82 first novels, began to appear, or are expected in bookstores by the end of October.
The first selection of the Goncourt, the most prestigious literary awards in the French speaking world, will include fifteen titles. The fifteen authors selected, will be de facto in competition for the coveted prix Goncourt des lycéens including if they disappear the two following selections.
With an average of over 440,000 copies sold, the Goncourt des lycéens has become one of the literary awards, the most appreciated authors and publishers.
A recent study by the institute of marketing GfK reported that a novel decorated with the red band “Prix Goncourt” flowed at an average of nearly 400,000 copies. A Renaudot sells on average more than 220,000 copies, the Femina to be more than 80,000 (crowned last year, “The flap” of Philippe Lançon, one of the best sales of the year 2018, more than doubled this figure) and the Medici in at least 40,000 copies.
The juries of the Médicis and the Femina have the particularity to also select foreign securities.
But the only question that matters is who will be included in the first selection for the prix Goncourt.
– The time of Amélie Nothomb ? –
Twelve years after having been selected by the Goncourt prize (it was in 2007 for “Neither Eve nor Adam), the popular Amélie Nothomb does it again on the list of academicians Goncourt?
His 28th novel, “Thirst” (Albin Michel), in which belgian novelist puts himself in the skin of Jesus just before his crucifixion, has more than appeals to the president of the academy Goncourt, Bernard Pivot.
“Amélie Nothomb survived. She published for many years, at the end of August, a novel friendly and harmless (…) and lo And behold, stupor, and tremors, hygiene of the writer, Amélie Nothomb has published a novel, ambitious, original, rough, hard, philosophical where it puts himself in danger (…) The book is so unexpected and so successful that it will be one of the literary events of the season,” wrote Bernard Pivot in his column in the Sunday Newspaper.
The public is already conquered. According to the barometer weekly Livres Hebdo/GfK, released Friday, “Thirst” is the only novel of the new school year to make its entry in the Top 20 best-selling books (in all formats), and has been immediately ranked at the 2nd place on the list.
We will watch, of course, the name or the absence of Yann Moix, crowned by the Goncourt first novel in 1996, in the selection of the Goncourt. Her novel, “Orleans” (Grasset), where he recounts his painful childhood has triggered a media storm.
The father and the brother of the writer dispute his version of the facts (the brother of Yann Moix accusing him of having been his executioner). There are added revelations about the past anti-semitic writer.
The only certainty is that Yann Moix will not be included in the selection of the Renaudot award, he has already obtained in 2013.
Among the novels that we can expect to see selected, there are “human things” (Gallimard), Karine Tuil, “All men do not live in the world in the same way” (The Olive tree) by Jean-Paul Dubois, “The temptation” (Stock) of Luke Lang, “A joy fierce” (Grasset) of Sorj Chalandon, or “Pink desert” (Gallimard) by Violaine Huisman.
Last year, the jury chaired by Bernard Pivot had placed the first five novels in her first selection.
This year several titles worthy of this honor. We can mention helter-skelter The “ball of crazy” (Albin Michel) Victoria Mas (already awarded the prix Stanislas), “A history of France” (Gallimard) of Joffrine Donnadieu, or “heat” (Flammarion) of Victor, Jestin, a young writer of 25 years.
The Goncourt and the Renaudot will be awarded on 4 November.
