The town hall in Lokta in Sokolovsk is preparing the reconstruction of the trusses and roofs of the local castle, February 6, 2023.
Loket (Sokolovsko) – Repairs to the historic trusses and roofs at the Loket castle should start this year. The city monument has roofs in a very bad condition, they leak in places and the rafters are attacked by wood rot. The cost of the construction works will be about 44 million crowns, half of which should come from the subsidy. After more than 20 years, Loket Castle will receive its original burnt bricks, Loket Deputy Mayor Petr Zahradníček (TOP09) told ČTK today.

Until now, there were wooden shingles on the Loket monument. Their disadvantage is that they have to be treated regularly, which costs the castle administration a lot of money. In addition, the current wooden covering has been on the castle for over 20 years, which is the limit of its lifespan. Therefore, the city management, after an agreement with the preservationists, decided to put red burnt bags on the castle, which were originally on it. Their advantage is that they last tens to 100 years, i.e. significantly longer than shingles.
The unsatisfactory state of the roofs and trusses was confirmed in Lokti by an expert opinion, which the city commissioned last year. The roofs are leaking in places, parts of the rafters are damaged by rot and wood rot. Some of them are unprofessionally repaired and their condition continues to deteriorate. Builders will repair hundreds of years old beams, replace the most damaged ones.
The city has completed project documentation for the reconstruction of the roofs of all castle buildings. According to her, the repairs should cost 44 million crowns. He will then announce a tender for the contractor. According to the deputy mayor, work could begin this summer. The city received a subsidy for them from the ITI Karlovy Vary program, together with the mandatory co-participation of the city, it is 27 million crowns. The remaining 17 million crowns must be given by the city of 3,000 from its own budget or get another subsidy. If the town hall fails to get another external contribution, it will divide the work into several stages. They should then last approximately two years.
Construction work should not affect the operation of the monument, which is open all year round. “Of course, the castle will be under scaffolding, or certain parts of it, but all the safety conditions that are necessary for visitor traffic will be maintained,” said Jana Těžká, director of the non-profit company Hrad Loket. The public cannot enter the premises where there are historical trusses. However, after their restoration, they could be accessible at least on extraordinary occasions. “It would be the first time in history,” added the director.
One of the most popular monuments in the Karlovy Vary region had a good season last year. It was visited by 148,000 people, which is roughly four percent less than in the record year 2019. They are recording high attendance this year as well.
