Why would two 32-year-old mathematicians, with good jobs and training, want to quit their jobs and sacrifice salary and time to set up a technology consultancy? Mysteries of true entrepreneurship embodied by Roger Agustín and Eloi Marín. Both met studying Mathematics at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia, but their professional paths were divergent. Agustín did a master’s degree at Esade and devoted himself to strategic consulting, while Marín opted for a postgraduate degree in Theoretical Physics at Imperial College and began his doctorate at Oxford.
After several years working for someone else, three they raised 3,000 euros and the courage it takes to get Prenomics up and running. “We detected that there was an opportunity in the market,” says Agustín on the other end of the phone. That first step was the anticipation of a journey of effort, successes and mistakes. “We saw that we could provide complete solutions to companies based on data analysis.” A firm was born that develops its own technology to integrate data, build algorithms and offer a very simple visualization to its clients so that they make good decisions with what they have in front of the screen. With 200,000 euros of turnover last year (and 350,000 expected this year) they do not lose money thanks to sacrificing their own salaries. “We have not leveraged. We finance ourselves with projects ”. There are already 12 employees and they have a well-trodden path in terms of the services they offer. They have had diverse clients, from road maintenance companies to water management or the Sabadell police. “The world of data analysis is very transversal, applicable in multiple sectors. In the insurance, industrial, services sector… we have had several collaborations with considerable success ”. Their functions are divided (Agustín in management and Marín as director of technology), but together they believe they have managed to develop solutions “that go from beginning to end”, and that save the hiring of several suppliers other than clients. “We put everything under one umbrella. Before, 100% of our income came from consulting and now we have several clients who use our technology, which is being a very strong lever ”.
All this combined with a horizontal work style. “More than hierarchies, good ideas reign.” Perhaps that is why they have a very high employee loyalty ratio, with hardly any turnover. They see the future open. “There is a long way to go in enabling the democratic use of analytical solutions in companies thanks to our technology.” They do it out of conviction and pleasure. “The pleasure of being able to be doing something of yours, which responds to your vision and your way of understanding things. The potential for this to become something bigger, and that doesn’t necessarily come from selling the company. “
