According to Sanduová, there have been Russian plans to destabilize Moldova since last autumn, but the Russians did not achieve their goals thanks to the interventions of the Moldovan security forces. In autumn, Moscow focused on the energy crisis, at this stage violent actions to change the government in Chisinau are expected, which will be disguised as protests, the president said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said last week that Moscow plans to overthrow the democratic establishment in Moldova. According to Sandu, the information provided by Ukraine has now been confirmed by the Moldovan authorities.

“The materials obtained from our Ukrainian partners provide good documentation of the locations and logistical aspects for the organization of these subversive activities. The plan also includes the use of persons from abroad for violent actions,” she said. President, she mentioned people from Russia, Belarus, Serbia and Montenegro by name. According to her, Moscow is also counting on the help of the pro-Russian opposition in Moldova.

“To prevent this scenario, I ask all state institutions to show maximum vigilance,” said Sanduová. She also called on parliament to pass laws as soon as possible to give the secret service and prosecutor's office more effective tools to ensure the country's security.

Moldova, home to about 2.6 million people, is wedged between Ukraine and Romania. Since the start of the war in Ukraine, it has come under enormous pressure, heightened by fears that Russia could expand its invasion into Moldovan territory to annex the pro-Russian separatist region of Transnistria to Moscow-controlled territories.
