Moscow – The Russian Ministry of Defense announced today that the Russian army repelled an attempt by Ukrainian forces to launch a massive air attack on Crimea: according to it, air defenses shot down six drones, and another four neutralized means of radio-electronic warfare. The attack did not cause any damage to the ground or victims, the ministry claims according to Russian media.

Crimea, which Russia annexed in violation of international law in the spring of 2014, is the target of similar attacks quite often. Last month, the installed governor claimed that air defenses shot down a Ukrainian drone about to attack a steam-gas power plant in Sevastopol. It is also the target of drone attacks as a base for the Russian Navy.

On Tuesday, a number of Russian regions, including the Moscow region, reported drone strikes. A fire broke out at an oil storage facility in the southern Russian port city of Tuapse overnight, which, according to Russian media, was caused by an attack by drones. In the evening, the media, referring to social networks, wrote about the explosions at the Yeysk air base in the south of Russia. The Russian edition of the BBC called the airstrikes the biggest action of its kind since the beginning of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Kiev has traditionally not commented on the incidents, however it can be assumed that Ukrainian forces are behind the attacks, the BBC noted. Ukraine has been resisting Russian aggression for more than a year. During that time, it also happened for the first time that a foreign drone flew as far as the Moscow region. This suggests that Moscow itself, with its government buildings, could become a potential target.
