Neptunia ReVerse is the version PlayStation 5 of the original Hyperdimension Neptunia Re: Birth1, and today’s review is based on this next gen edition. A video game that, like all Hyperdimension Neptunia, has no pretensions and has only one goal entertainment, without missing a healthy dose of fan service. Let’s see in detail what it is.
Neptunia ReVerse brings console wars to the world of JRPG
The narrative of Neptunia ReVerse it is quite simple but enjoyable, although definitely not the strong point of the game. It is a fantasy reinterpretation of the War Console, with the game world that is called Gamindustri, a name that clearly recalls the concept of Game Industry. The 4 goddesses of this world, a bit as if they were Nintendo, Xbox, PlayStation is PC (there are no obvious references, but being 4 the comparison is spontaneous). they fight for supremacy. At one point 3 of them band together against Neptune, the protagonist, for knock her out The blow does lose your memory to our heroine, who will aim to recover it and clarify what happened (obviously we will not continue further to avoid unwanted spoilers). If we can just hazard a guess, Neptune it is probably there representation of the PC, and seeing the initial fight with the other 3 “consoles” teaming up to beat what is probably the most powerful opponent, it would also make sense.
The gameplay of Neptunia ReVerse satisfies, without smudging
Very often the story in this type of games is secondary, given that the components that dominate it wink at the fans like that, with the usual and inevitable fan service that distinguishes all Hyperdimension Neptunia. Neptunia ReVerse is no exception, but the gameplay is unexpectedly the happiest note of this review. This title, by Compile Heart is Felistella, it’s not just all 2D / 3D little ladies and no roast, on the contrary it has one game structure who manages to entertain very pleasantly who appreciates i JRPG like this one, albeit without particular flashes or innovations. After all, the winning team does not change, and even in this case the good old proverb is not wrong.
THE fighting of Neptunia ReVerse they are a well-managed mix of real-time and turn-based battles, with a hint of strategy due to the positioning of our party members on the pitch. The classic actions of a JRPG, from the use of basic attacks to that of Skill, passing through the use of objects and the activation of special powers. Some of the girls we can recruit from our ranks are indeed capable of change appearance, greatly improving the power their attacks and, above all, having access to Skill is special moves exclusive to their enhanced form. To give an example without spoilers, as it is linked to the very early stages of the game, the protagonist Neptune can unleash a skill that fills the enemy with empowered attacks, knocking out virtually any early game base monster. Transformation, however, consumes the 20% of total SP (the mana to be clear).
A little flicker in the combat however there is, that is, the management of attacks on enemies. Depending on the weapons we have, we will be able to hit a certain area of the combat zone. If there we position intelligently, going to include more than one enemy in ours range of action, it is possible to hit multiple opponents at the same time. There are weapons, like some greatswords, that cover a larger area than normal and allow you to strike even three monsters at a time wanting. Hence the strategic component of the game, in a very pleasant way, makes the fighting less auto-play, rewarding the player who uses a little more reasoning. For this the gameplay of Neptunia ReVerse is by far the best part that we can underline in this review, and raises the title a generous notch above the sufficiency, being equipped with a mechanics that are not only nice but systemic, which can be used in various ways.
The progression was also well done, even if in this case it was simply done a homework. We rediscover the classics dungeon non-procedural of this type of JRPG, with Side Quest which are almost uniquely based about killing a tot number of monsters of a certain type, in exchange for rewards both in in-game currency and useful items. A classicon, which is a good contour to the gaming experience but does not really elevate it quality. The management of the characters is also good, although also in this case quite basic, with the possibility of change the equipment according to your needs. Pleasant that there is often one net detachment, although not too much, between before and after the purchase of new, more advanced equipment. The sense of improvement is tangible, and in the end that’s what every self-respecting progression system has to do.
The novelty of this version for PlayStation 5 is the possibility to start the game with all the party unlocked from the start. It won’t affect the narrative, but it will obviously have heavy effects on the experience of gameplay. We recommend that you start the game without the party in its entirety, unlocking it as you go, so as not to make the game too simple in the early stages.
Nice and well done technical compartment
Excluding three-dimensional models that are not exceptional, even if cute, the technical sector of Neptunia ReVerse it is well done and having stated from the beginning of the review that the fan service plays a pivotal role, due note of merit to character design. It is not difficult find at least one waifu in between, if you are passionate about this genre! Some details such as reflections are also very beautiful, a little gem that we undoubtedly appreciated.
At the sound level there are notmemorable music, also in this case all very functional and simply well done. The English dub, as usual, is little more than mediocre and the one in Japanese remains highly recommended. However, there is no localization other than English as regards the texts of the dialogs and menus.
Definitely Neptunia ReVerse is a very good game, without infamy and without particular praise, with a characterdesign rich in fan service but never vulgar or inappropriate. A light, entertaining gaming experience recommended for gaming enthusiasts JRPG, as a bit of a niche as a derivative of the genre.
