Mercedes unveiled its latest commercial vehicle with internal combustion engine which will be on the market in Germany from mid-September: spacious and compact, it will start at a cost of 20,000 euros. In 2022, it will be the turn of the electric eCitan with a range of 285 km
It will be the last new Mercedes van to offer the internal combustion engine. Pending the market launch in Germany scheduled for mid-September, the second generation Citan will be available in the Van and Tourer Mpv versions, guaranteeing compact external dimensions and high space and load capacities. A car “with clear and unquestionably Mercedes shapes, as well as simple lines and strong surfaces that embrace the Sensual Purity philosophy”, defines Gorden Wagener, head of design for the Stuttgart house. The new van will start at a cost of 20,000 euros (reported to the German market) for the basic model.

The standard version of the Citan is 4,498mm long, with a cargo compartment of 3,050mm in the van variant and a flexible partition wall. Mercedes itself stated that the short wheelbase version of 2,716 mm offers more space than the previous model, waiting for the long wheelbase version and the Mixto to be launched on the market. The edge of the loading floor is 59 cm high, while the rear door leaves – which are asymmetrical, with the left one wider than the right one and which must be opened first – can be locked at 90 or 180 degrees. At the front, the suspension is MacPherson type.

Aspects to note in the new Citan are the lively and horizontal shape of the dashboard and the possibility of equipping the van with the Mbux system. The controls can be managed via the 7 “infotainment system, the touch buttons on the steering wheel and the voice assistant. Smartphone integration with Apple Car Play and Android Auto, Bluetooth hands-free and Dab and Dab + digital radio are possible. Among other functions, “Mercedes me connect” services to conveniently check the most important information about your vehicle at any time, while navigation with “Live Traffic Information” and “Car-to-X” communication enables traffic data in real time Another new feature is the possibility to search for a destination using a three-word code, thanks to the what3word (w3w) system.

The engines that equip the Mercedes Citan comply with Euro 6d standards. For the van version, three diesel and two petrol variants will be offered, all turbocharged. The first three, with 1,461 cc displacement, have powers of 75, 95 and 116 hp. The 1,332 cc petrol versions deliver 102 and 131 hp. Also included is the “Overpower / Overtorque” function, which raises power up to 121 Hp and torque from 270 to 295 Nm. For the Tourer version, on the other hand, you can choose between a 95 Hp diesel engine and three petrol engines. The more powerful ones may have a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. In the second half of next year, the eCitan electric model will be launched, completing a range that already includes the eVito and the eSprinter, which has a charging time from 10 to 80% in 40 minutes and an autonomy that it should be about 285 km in the Wltp cycle. Towbar equipment is also available.
