Karlovy Vary – The newly elected President Petr Pavel will start a two-day visit to the Karlovy Vary region today. It is his first major trip to the regions since his election. In the Karlovy Vary region, he will meet with representatives of municipalities in all three districts, he plans to talk with citizens and visit schools or businesses.

Shortly after his victory in the second round of the presidential election, Pavel stated that he would first like to visit the regions where his opponent Andrej Babiš received more support. In the Karlovy Vary region, Pavel won 49 percent of the vote, while Babiš got 51 percent. Of the districts, Pavel won only in Karlovy Vary, Chebsko and Sokolovsko was more in favor of Babiš. In addition to the Karlovy Vary Region, Babiš also won in the Ústí Region and the Moravian-Silesian Region.
Pavel wants to get to know more deeply the problems in the regions that are collectively referred to as structurally disabled. They have in common the consequences of coal mining, but also a lower level of education or wages. He wants to know where people and mayors, who according to Pavel are often in favor of the ANO movement, see the main problems. “I will be most interested in what the residents of Karlovy Vary consider to be the main problems, how they perceive the effectiveness or, on the contrary, the ineffectiveness of government measures and how to prevent young people from leaving the region,” he said about the visit on Tuesday on Facebook.
In Karlovy Vary region, today Pavel plans to meet with representatives of municipalities in the Aš region, in Cheb he will visit the Klubíčko maternity center, he will talk with entrepreneurs and representatives of companies and visit one of the enterprises in the Cheb Industrial Park. This is the BWI company, which has been producing shock absorbers and brakes for cars in Cheb since 2016. The company has Chinese owners. On the way through the region, they will also stop at the town hall in Sokolov.
In Karlovy Vary, he will meet with representatives of the Karlovy Vary region and the city of Karlovy Vary. He will meet both with governor Petr Kulhánek (KOA) and the mayor of the city Andrea Pfeffer Ferklová (ANO). He should also start the hockey match between HC Energie and Sparta Praha. At the end of the first day of the visit, he will meet citizens in the regional library.
Pavel was elected president in the second round of direct elections, which took place on January 27 and 28. He was elected the fourth Czech president by the votes of 3.36 million people, which represented 58.32 percent of the voting electorate. Babiš, who was voted for by 2.4 million people, defeated by around 960,000 votes. 70.25 percent of eight and a quarter million voters came to vote.
Pavel and his team took a vacation last week, the work program started this week on Monday, when, among other things, he met with President Miloš Zeman. On Friday and Saturday, he will attend a security conference in Munich, where he anticipates the possibility of bilateral meetings.
