Nintendo has cleaned up abusive Nintendo Switch eShop promotions
If you sometimes hang around on the eShop, looking for a good title to offer yourself, you have undoubtedly already cast an eyelash in the ranking of the best sellers. You must have found some headlines there, but also some independent nuggets. But it also happened to find games that had nothing to do with the others and which you have certainly never heard of …
In fact, the ranking of games on the eShop is based on the best sales / downloads during the last 14 days. The developers and some publishers had found various tips that allowed their titles to stand out. The best known being that of the big promotions (a technique that we had already discussed with publishers / developers during the Sunday show) which inevitably brought up the titles on promotion in the best sales. Another “tip” was to offer one (or more) other title (s) for free for the purchase of one in particular, which inevitably pushed the free title up in the rankings.
Simon Carless of Gamasutra announces that obviously the US eShop has made some adjustments to prevent this kind of “abuse”. So :
- Securities of an amount equal to 0.1 cts will not appear in the ranking.
- The rules of the US store would have changed and it would no longer be possible to offer a game on sale for less than $ 1.99.
For the moment these new rules do not concern the European store and no official communication has been made for the US store. To see if we will also be concerned… that would mean the end of free games or at 0.99 euros…
