People wait in line in front of the building of the Czech National Bank (ČNB) to buy a special thousand-koruna note issued on the 30th anniversary of the division of the Czechoslovak currency, February 9, 2023, Prague.

Prague – People bought a special 1,000-koruna note issued on the 30th anniversary of the division of the Czechoslovak currency. The Czech National Bank (ČNB) announced shortly after 4:15 p.m. today that the 200,000 banknotes issued had sold out. Hundreds of people were waiting in queues in front of CNB branches even today. The queue stood in, among others, Prague, Ostrava, Ústí nad Labem or Brno. ČTK reporters found it out on the spot. Already at the start of the sale on Wednesday, there was a lot of interest from people, and most branches closed queues during the day due to capacity reasons.

“The exchange of the 1,000 CZK banknote with an overprint for the 30th anniversary of the division of the Czech and Slovak Republics has been terminated at all CNB regional offices due to the exhaustion of stocks,” the CNB said on Twitter. The exchange began Wednesday morning. When in 2019 the central bank issued a special one-hundred-crown coin to mark the centenary of the Czechoslovak crown, it took a long time to dismantle it.

A long line of people was just like on Wednesday at the CNB branch in Ostrava this morning. From Nádražní Street, where the entrance to the bank is, the queue again turned along Zámecká Street to Tyršová. Tens to hundreds of people were waiting in it. In Prague, the queue stretched from the central bank building to Nekázanka Street early in the morning.

In Brno, the queue was noticeably smaller in the morning than on Wednesday, when it wound from the entrance to the bank in Rooseveltova Street through Sukova, Malinovského náměstí and Jánská street to Masarykova street. This morning, people stood around the bank and the queue led through Sukova and ended at Malinovského náměstí. Even so, an estimated several hundred people were waiting at the place.

A special banknote could be obtained until the inventory was dismantled for 1,000 crowns at the cash desks of the central bank in Prague, České Budějovice, Pilsen, Ústí nad Labem, Hradec Králové, Brno and Ostrava . Each interested party could buy a maximum of five banknotes. Some people started offering these banknotes on the Internet at several times higher prices.
