Different artists: The Metallica Blacklist
Blackened Recordings. ★★★★
30 years then an album by the band Metallica was released, which was concisely named: Metallica. The band’s title album got to know it instead of its official name Black Albumina due to the black cover image of the disc.
Nowadays Black Album is one of the classic publications of metal music. The album took the popularity of thrash metal Pioneer Metallica to a new level and includes many of the band’s biggest hits. Black Albumia has sold more than 30 million units.
To celebrate the anniversary, the historic album is being celebrated in a massive way. It was released last Friday The Metallica Blacklist album featuring musicians from around the world Black Albumin their own versions of the songs.
On the album there are as many as 53 songs, including 12 Nothing Else Mattersia, seven The Unforgivenia and six Enter Sandmania. It’s alot. Too much, one could say at times while listening to the record.
There are several international stars involved, such as Miley Cyrus, Elton John and Pharrell Williams. Equally, respected musicians around the world can perform their own interpretations: a Nigerian star musician, among others Tomi Owó, Originating in India Vishal Dadlani, Japanese born Rina Sawayama and a Russian-born German pianist Igor Levit.
In addition to metal and rock, Metallica’s songs on the album bend into electronic dance music, rap, pop, jazz, classical music, country and punk, among other things.
As a whole The Metallica Blacklist is excellent. When you listen to it, you rejoice again and again. Just when it starts to feel like you can’t afford any more Metallica interpretations, it’s time for something surprising again.
Of course, it is obvious that a big thank you falls James Hetfield, Lars Ulrichin, Kirk Hammettin and Jason Newstedin for the original versions. The record is full of full hits that haven’t expired in 30 years.
A new cover cannot be called complete. At worst, the record resembles them Only life embarrassing moments in the program, where neither the new version nor the performer of the original song is enthusiastic about the song. Moments The Metallica Blacklist when you listen, you get the feeling that quantity has been more important than quality.
Already the first paragraph, Enter Sandman, would have done less. At the end of the album, I have forgotten that I am also a Latin popper Juanes and indie rock band Weezer performed the song. There is even more repetition Nothing in Else Matters. Of course, everyone has wanted to version the iconic rockballad, but the couple should have said no. Mickey Guyton, Chris Stapleton and occurring under the name Roxette Per Gesslen the band will remain unspoken.
In its cuisine, the album still features the third most listened-to Spotify artist of last year. J Balvinin Wherever I May Roam -interpretation.
Fortunately the vast majority of the songs on the album are great, and they open up completely new sides to familiar songs. Rina Sawayama’s voice is startling Enter in Sandman. St. Vincent Sad But True takes the song to the world of electropop. In the hands of others, Biffy Clyro interprets it primarily as a tick Holier Than Thoun surprisingly.
Tomi Owón Through the Never is insane as a song performance, and followed Phoebe Bridgersin Nothing Else Matters the most beautiful performance of the album. Equally fine is the version of the same song performed under the direction of Miley Cyrus, which was already praised in my previous review. Igor Levit’s classic interpretation deserves a special mention Nothing from Else Matters and a top saxophonist who charmed even at the Flow Festival a couple of years ago Kamasi Washington My Friend of Misery.
Of course, the album also has traditional rock and metal versions of the songs. Of these, Slipknot must be highlighted Corey Taylorin in addition, Ghost, a Swedish gift to the hard rock world that cannons Enter Sandman finely. The Mongolian band The Hu, which calls their music “hunnirock”, has its own chapter Through the Never tempo.
One thing is for sure The Metallica Blacklist when listening: it offers something for everyone. It is hardly meant to be listened to as a bug.
Editor’s Choices: Handsome Ismo Alanko and an unexpected hit rapper
Ismo Alanko & Oulu Symphony: Lullabies from all over the world
Fullsteam Records. ★★★★
Samana on the day of Metallican Black Album released a massive remake of 53 songs, is Ismo Alangon a truly impressive ensemble pressed to the new record for exactly an hour. Lullabies from all over the world contains both great arrangements of the hits of the Finnish rock icon and new songs, which are also impressive when played by the Oulu Symphony. As such, the title track in particular comes to mind The lullaby of the whole world. The conductors have been responsible for the arrangements, among other things Jaakko Kuusisto, Marzi Nyman and Lotta Wennäkoski. The climax rises When Finland fell from a tree, connected so Hungry for singing than Eurovisionlogo.
Drake: Certified Lover Boy
Ovo Sound / Republic. ★★★
Plasterer Drake has been in Spotify’s annual statistics for many years, either the world’s most listened to artist or at least in the top five. So no wonder it’s new Certified Lover Boy album has been long awaited. It was originally scheduled to appear in early 2021, but the release was postponed until the fall. The record is guaranteed Drake: a gentle atmosphere, extremely well-produced music that you can imagine happily listening to in a stylish club. However, there is nothing particularly surprising about it, which is why Drake’s novelty does not rise to the top when listing the best hip hop records of the year.
J Balvin: Jose
Universal Music Latino. ★★★
Colombian reggaeton star J Balvin is just one of many examples of the fact that much of the world’s most listened to pop music is now made in non-English speaking countries. J Balvin has been among the most listened to Spotify artists in the world with his songs and also on the Finnish hit lists. The latest album Jose strives to offer a more personal side to the musician, after all, the name of the album is the musician ‘s own first name. Musically, though, the whole thing is familiar stuff, and nothing is particularly toned, even though the album is full of going pop songs.
Apulanta: 3D crises
Apulanta Oy. ★★
30th anniversary Apulanta is a giant in the Finnish music field who has achieved almost everything in his career that can be imagined to be achievable in Finland. The band has managed to surprise in recent years as well, and for example, a nu metal-inspired couple a couple of years ago A seagull on top of a log was ingenious. New 3D crises continues to play the heavy electronic sound world of recent years in style. The song has clearly taken on a familiar dull atmosphere, but this time it turns out to be more intrusive.
