Former Zamalek head coach Christian Gross seems to have won the race to become the new boss for struggling Bundesliga side Schalke 04 in the coming period.
Swiss coach Gross had announced his retirement from management, bringing his 32-year career to an end back in May 2020.
He was reappointed by Saudi Professional League, Al Ahli Jeddah, back in October after parting ways with Zamalek.
The 66-year-old led Zamalek to the CAF Confederation Cup title in 2019, before seeing his contract runs out, with the club losing the league title to Al Ahly after his departure.

And according to the German press, Gross was shortlisted by Bundesliga club Schalke to coach the struggling side.
He was in competition with former Vissel Kobe boss Thorsten Fink to become the new manager of the Royal Blues.
But according to renowned German outlet Bild, the Schalke board had decided on the appointment of Gross as the successor for caretaker Hubb Stevens.

Schalke are going through one of the team’s worst league runs ever as they haven’t achieved a league win since January 2020. They currently sit in the bottom of the Bundesliga table with four points from 13 games.
The club started the season with David Wagner as manager, before he was replaced by Manuel Baum, who was sacked just last week.
Huub Stevens is not taking charge of the club as a caretaker until the appointment of a new manager.
Christian Gross has experience in German football, having coached VfB Stuttgart during the 2011/12 season.
He also had stints at Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur, and a number of Swiss clubs, namely FC Wil 1900, Grasshopper Zurich, FC Basel, and BSC Young Boys.
