A crime that took place 27 years ago has finally been tried. The result was the acquittal of five police officers accused of participating in the massacre, which took place on October 18, 1994, in Vila Nova Brasília, Complexo do Alemão, in Rio de Janeiro. The unanimous decision of the jury was to acquit police officers Rubens de Souza Bretas, José Luiz Silva dos Santos, Carlos Coelho Macedo, Ricardo Gonçalves Martins and Paulo Roberto Wilson da Silva.
In voting on the series of questions formulated according to the crimes imputed to the defendants, the jurors acknowledged the facts, but not the authorship of the murders. The session, which lasted two days, was chaired by Judge Simone de Faria Ferraz. The Public Ministry asked for the acquittal of the defendants for lack of evidence.
