The 78th edition of the Venice International Film Festival began this Wednesday, September 1 with the gala of the world premiere of Parallel Mothers by Pedro Almodóvar. So also with the recognition of the career of Roberto Benigni.
The actor, known worldwide for starring in the Oscar-winning Life is Beautiful, received the Golden Lion for the trajectory. The recognition was given by the director of El piano, Jane Campion.
At the ceremony, which was attended by the President of Italy, Sergio Mattarella, Benigni took the stage excited and with “a feeling of love and immense gratitude towards the spectators around the world.”
“I expected to receive a kitten, but a lion … is the most prestigious and luminous award I could dream of,” he said. “I come from a family of aristocratic poverty and many people have helped me to form my career,” he commented.
While giving his speech, the actor recalled the directors he has worked with throughout his career. This they mentioned Bertolucci, Costa Gavras, Jim Jarmusch, Fellini, Blake Edwards or Matteo Garrone.
As he did when he won the Oscar for best foreign film, Roberto Benigni dedicated his Golden Lion to his wife Nicoletta Braschi, with whom he attended the gala. “I don’t even want to dedicate this award to him, because it’s his. I only know one way to measure time: with you and without you”He declared amid the applause of the attendees.

Life is Beautiful was not only his most ambitious film, but his most personal. Years later, the actor commented that he heard the story of a Nazi concentration camp survivor who explained how part of his family was murdered. The story allowed him to create the tape and each of the characters.
