Disappointing and bewildered in Red Bull, fast and effective in AlphaTauri. These have been, from 2019 to today, the two faces of Pierre Gasly. The young and talented French driver was promoted alongside Max Verstappen at the start of the 2019 season, after Daniel Ricciardo’s departure. His performance, however, was never up to that required by a team competing for podiums and victories. It is no coincidence that the Rouen native was sent back unceremoniously to the then Toro Rosso halfway through the championship, in a transfer that could have sanctioned the end of his career. That jump back, on the other hand, represented Gasly’s luck in a certain sense.
Horner: “Gasly-Albon gifted, but Perez brings experience”
In fact, with the team from Faenza, the talent from beyond the Alps was found, hitting three podiums in three seasons, with the icing on the cake of the victory won in Monza last year. His constant performance is making him one of the rising stars of this sport and many are imagining a future for him in a top team. Gasly is still under contract with Red Bull and will remain so until 2022. This would allow Christian Horner and Helmut Marko, if they so wish, to reform the team next year. Verstappen-Gasly couple. The performance of Sergio Perez and the previous two years ago, however, advise against this option according to the former Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg.
Gasly and the example of Vettel and Schumacher
“We have to remember that the situation he has now is completely different mentally – said Rosberg to Sky Deutschland – he no longer has Verstappen next to him in the same car. Perhaps this was precisely the problem. He couldn’t mentally cope with having such a strong teammate. This is the problem for Red Bull and also the reason why they probably haven’t made a decision yet “, concluded the 2016 world champion.
