Active and Public Transportation Week takes place from May 28 to June 4, 2023 in Rouyn-Noranda.
The municipality intends to take advantage of this week to encourage citizens to adopt active and collective modes of transportation such as walking, cycling or running for their daily trips.
Active and Public Transport Week was set up a few years ago to raise awareness among the population about making their utilitarian journeys in ways other than driving alone, whether by bicycle, walking , public transit or carpooling. The idea is to set up a program that can allow citizens to explore these different alternative modes of transportation, explains active living and events coordinator Kim Hurtubise.
The person in charge also recalls that a program has been set up by the City for the week with several partners including RécréOsisko, the CSSRN and the CISSSAT.
It There will be a march for the over 50s, workshops for independent bicycle repair and targeted campaigns in schools.
The City encourages citizens to use alternative modes of transportation, including cycling.
She reminds that Rouyn-Noranda has already been offering free bus transportation since May 1, 2023.
According to the coordinator, preliminary data demonstrate an increase in ridership on the buses.
What we see from the team of drivers is a fairly large increase clear of the traffic on the buses, she said. Otherwise, we are still working to optimize the service. Currently it is free, but we still have work in progress to work on optimizing the bus routes. We also have the Travel Management Plan which was launched last February, with several actions related to sustainable mobility and there is also a resulting action plan, mentions Kim Hurtubise.
