After qualifying for the Belgian GP, in which he enchanted the spectators by winning an exceptional second place, George Russell repeated a similar performance at the same tests in Russia, from where the driver of the Williams had started in third place for today’s race. Thanks to the pace not up to par with the cars of the top teams, and after the confusion of the last laps in the rain, the Englishman still finished the race in tenth position, thus conquering the last place in the standings valid for the points zone .
However, a positive performance for the future Mercedes driver, who wanted to analyze his performance once the race was over: “I think we faced a very tough test – commented the British – we did our duty without making gross mistakes for the entire duration of the GP. We kept third for the first twelve laps, and it was a lot of fun to fight for this placement, trying to resist attacks from McLaren, Mercedes and Aston Martin. We have all of them behind us, and that’s something we must be proud of. In the final I fought with the intermediate tires, moreover with a set already used after I had used all the others in qualifying. In the end, we took another point home – concluded Russell – it wasn’t the result we were dreaming of, but if we were offered a 10th place finish before the weekend, we would have accepted it. In general, it was a good race ”.
Definitely different the outcome of the second Williams of Nicolas Latifi, retired from the race one lap from the end after hitting the barriers following a spin: “Unfortunately – said the Canadian – I stayed with the slicks at the end of the race, when it started to rain. I made a mistake at Turn 7, where I turned around and had contact with the barriers, damaging the rear wing. At that point there was nothing more to do and the most sensible thing was to collect the car. It was a frustrating race, because the car provided very good driving sensations, perhaps the best ever, but I still couldn’t make progress at the start of the race or stay attached to the Haas at the most favorable point for overtaking. It was unfortunate – he concluded – because in the first stint I felt the tires very well, and if I had started later I could have kept a good position that would have allowed me to get a better result, but sometimes races are like that ”.
