The first season in Ferrari of Carlos Sainz it is turning out to be more than positive. The Spaniard, in a transitional year for the Prancing Horse team – waiting for what may be 2022 – has already hit two podiums and is only two and a half points away from his teammate Charles Leclerc. Now, however, the most awaited and intriguing challenge arrives for the Madrid-born: the first GP of Italy, in Monza, as a driver of the red. Last year, behind the wheel of McLaren, he had finished an incredible second place. Being able to replicate it will be almost impossible, but there is the desire to dream.
Speaking to Sky Sport 24 and presenting the weekend of the Italian GP, the # 55 of the red also spoke of dreams: “Here I feel at home. The welcome I received was special. Until you feel that energy you don’t know. I asked Leclerc a lot of questions. He tried to explain to me, but until you live it it’s not the same. Making a podium here, as a Ferrari driver, would be great – Sainz admitted – but it must be said that we are all thinking especially about next year. This year there is hardly any development on the car anymore. Monza is not Monaco, not the ideal track for us at the moment. But we will try “. Analyzing his first 13 races as a Ferrari driver, many recognized the Iberian driver as surprisingly quick to adapt to the environment of the Cavallino. “My first goal was to integrate into the team – explained the person concerned – with everyone, even with a teammate. In the moment in which Ferrari is now, there is a need for two drivers to push the team, have a good relationship with each other and push themselves on the track to advance the car. Now what we want is to be even faster. When changing teams you always have doubts. I knew that Charles was at a very high level with Ferrari and I was wondering where I would be. You try to be optimistic, but you don’t know where you will be ”.
With his performances Sainz has been able to disprove several critics. But he revealed that he never heard from ‘underrated’ compared to the many emerging talents of the ‘new generation’. “I don’t know what people think. I am of the opinion that to be chosen by Ferrari you are not so much underestimated. Ferrari chooses certain drivers. I know there are those who think that maybe they are not at the level of the best – commented the Madrid driver – but I was the companion of Max, of Norris, of Hulkenberg, of Charles. I know where I am in relation to them. I keep doing my job. I try to talk on the track with the results. If you ask the people I’ve worked with on the different teams, I don’t think any of them underestimated me“.
