Aare (Sweden) – American skier Mikaela Shiffrin reigned supreme in both the Aare and the slalom, and with her 87th victory in the World Cup, she broke the record of home legend Ingemar Stenmark. In Friday's giant slalom in Sweden, she equaled his number of wins and today became independent from Stenmark at the head of the historical table. She once again outclassed the competition, she was almost a second ahead of the nearest competitor.

Vail native Shiffrin rewrote Cup Series history two days before her 28th birthday. In the slalom in Aare, she already won her thirteenth WC triumph this season. She already had a huge lead after the first round and gave the second Swiss, Wendy Holdenerová, a total of 92 hundredths. Home Swede Anna Swennová-Larssonová accompanied them to the podium. Czech representative Martina Dubovská took 16th place.

Stenmark, 66, who shone on the slopes in the 1970s and 1980s, has previously said that Shiffri was much better than he was. He watched today's race on TV. “She is so impressive, really great,” he told AFP. He says he doesn't regret losing the record. “I held that record for 34 years and it wasn't something I thought about very often. Only when it got shaken up – first with Lindsey Vonn coming close to breaking it and now with Shiffrin,” he added, adding that the record is part of his past.

His record balance was equaled and surpassed by Shiffrin in less than 24 hours in his native country. “It's nice to race again today. After such an incredible day as yesterday, I don't feel any pressure,” said the star American after the first round.

In the second, she finished safely for another first. “The best feeling is to have a second run when you have the lead and you want to be smart but also fast, your own race. And that's exactly what I did. It's amazing,” Shiffrin said. A surprise awaited her at the finish line. “My brother and sister-in-law are here, I didn't know they were coming. That's why it's so special,” said the skier, who had to deal with the tragic death of her father three years ago, with a smile. Therefore, she is accompanied only by her mother and at the same time trainer Eileen.

Of the 87 World Cup triumphs, Shiffrin has 53 in slaloms, and she can add another this season. She should complete three races in a week in the final in Andorra. He already has the big crystal globe (fifth in total) and both small ones for spinning disciplines. She secured the slalom one prematurely in the January race in Špindlerův Mlýn.
