“Atsu's lifeless body was found under the rubble. His phone was also found. Other things are still being brought out,” Murat Uzunmehmet told reporters.
In the immediate aftermath of the earthquake, there were reports that Atsu had made it out of extricate the wreckage. Later, however, this information turned out to be false.
The 31-year-old Hatayspor midfielder was supposed to fly out of Turkey a few hours before the earthquake, but after scoring the winning goal in a Turkish league match against Kasimpasa, he changed his mind and stayed, according to the coach.
Atsu came to Hatayspor last September. In the past, he played for Porto, with whom he won the Portuguese league in 2013. Then he headed to Chelsea, for which he did not play. He spent time at Arnhem, Everton, Málaga and Newcastle, where he transferred in 2017. He worked at the club until 2021.
He played 65 games for Ghana Atsu and helped them to second place at the African Championship in 2015. He also appeared at the World Cup a year earlier.
