In fact, in the first quarter of 2020, Sony had spent a little more than 400 000 terminals stamped Xperia in the world. A score that represents a massive drop in the order of 63.7%, compared to sales of last year. During the first quarter of 2019, Sony went into effect to 1.1 million smartphones.
The fault in coronavirus… and at prices that are too high ?
Obviously, this drop in sales has in large part been caused by the epidemic of sars coronavirus. Like some competitors, Sony has been forced to temporarily stop production of its smartphones, and the demand has been nearly zero during part of the quarter. For the current year, Sony expects operating profit to fall by at least 30% compared to the previous year.
Despite all this, Sony had already anticipated a sharp decline in sales of smartphones, and the giant nippon had set a target of 700 000 sales in the period. A score far to be reached… a few weeks ago, Sony has made official its first smartphone 5G, Xperia 1 II. A smartphone that will be available soon… at a price of 1199 euros.
At the same time, Sony offers since a few weeks, the Xperia L4, a smartphone ‘affordable’, displayed at 200€. However, if the Sony had a picture very qualitative it a few years ago (the beautiful era of the Z3 Compact), the emergence of terminal chinese (OnePlus, Oppo, Xiaomi, Huawei…) has put a fatal blow to the group, japan, which is struggling to question it. In fact, consumers prefer today focus their attention on these new brands, with smartphones often very successful, and less expensive than the terminals Xperia.
