The secretary of State to Digital, Cedric O, has deplored the attitude of Apple that would not have helped the French government for the application to work better on the iPhone.
This had to be one of the instruments lights made by the government in the framework of the déconfinement. StopCovid is supposed to prevent people who have been in the vicinity of infected individuals by the COVID-19. The application will however not be available the next week as though it was expected.
Cedric O, the secretary of State to Digital, today unveiled a more precise calendar. The app will enter in a test phase from 11 may. The week of may 25, will enable the national assembly to debate and vote on the use of this technical follow-up of contacts. Finally, it should be available on a voluntary basis from 2 June next.
This delay is mainly explained by difficulties encountered with the iPhone. This tool will depend on a lot of mobile operating systems from Google and Apple, however, there is a trouble with iOS. In detail, the latter would prevent the location through the Bluetooth when the application runs in the background and blocks so much of the functioning of the follow-up of StopCovid. These measures are necessary in normal times to protect the privacy of users, but the French government has asked Apple’s developments to enable the application to function correctly. A request rejected by the company who do not wish to modify its settings.
