In the United States, demand for batteries is expected to increase more than sixfold and will amount to approximately USD 55 billion per year (CZK 1.2 trillion) by the end of this decade. But the country is expected to be dependent on imports.
Demand for electric cars has surged in recent years as consumers increasingly buy electric cars. Interest in environmental protection and rising fuel prices contribute to this.
Lithium batteries should power a number of vehicles in the coming years. But they will also be necessary for military systems or consumer, medical and industrial electronics. Currently, 76 percent of lithium cells and the vast majority of components for those cells are manufactured in China.
Li-Bridge is a public-private alliance representing the US battery ecosystem. The US Department of Energy participated in its creation and is managed by the science and research center Argonne National Laboratory, which falls under the department. The alliance is working to accelerate the development of a robust supply chain for lithium batteries.
